England dominated the first session of the day, taking 4 crucial wickets in the form of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar. Shubman Gill and Axar Patel are currently on the crease at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam.
India lost both their openers on the third day of the second Test of the series in the first 20 minutes of the start of the play. James Andreson has been the pick of England’s bowlers so far, dismissing the Indian captain on 13 with a curler that smashed Rohit’s stumps and then removing Yashasvi Jaiswal on 17 in the next over. Meanwhile, Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley have been the other two wicket-getters for England.
Gill and Iyer were under tremendous pressure at the start of their innings, but the two batsmen were able to withstand the pressure in Vizag. Ben Stokes also missed a trick by allowing the openers to settle into the crease with easy singles. The two right-handers started by rotating the strike, but then moved on to hitting boundaries when required. The two stitched together an 81-run partnership and helped the Indian innings go past the 100 run mark.
England will be aiming to end the Indian innings before the lead goes past the 300-350 runs mark in order to give themselves a non-zero chance of attaining this target in the fourth innings.
With Gill batting on a score of 60 and the lead already over the 270 run mark, India will aim to set a total of above 400 runs in Vishakhapatnam in order to solidify their chances of a victory.
Earlier, on the second day of the Test match, England dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession to end India’s innings on 396.
While England made their usual aggressive start, putting pressure on India’s pacers and spinners, and were well placed at 114/1 at one stage, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance with the ball soon turned the match in India’s favour. Bumrah took 6 wickets on the day, conceding just 45 runs, with the other 4 wickets being shared by Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. England’s innings ended on 253, 143 runs behind India’s total.
